The Colors on His Skin
Jan. 16th, 2006 12:57 pmAs a sidebar on my lovely wife's post today, I bring to you a happening. A happening that happened yesterday.
Liam was playing with his little neighbor friend, Quinn. Quinn is 4 years old. He is rambunctious and loud and has an infinite font of boyish energy. I like Quinn, but he is certainly hand-full, and after a few hours of playing Liam was done. Liam walks into the living room from outside, and declares he is ready for Quinn to leave and that Quinn is not his friend anymore.
I ask why. Liam tells me Quinn is younger than he is, and so he can't be his friend. We debunk that excuse quickly by citing Cara, the 11 year-old girl who befriended Liam. Liam changes direction, and says "I don't like Quinn because of the color on his skin."
For you readers who share my love of Firefly, I had a Malcolm Reynolds moment: "Huh?"
For the life of me I thought Liam meant he didn't like the little rosy-splotches on Quinn's cheeks (they were playing outside in the brisk 45-degree Atlanta winter). Liam can be arbitrary, but not that arbitrary.
Morgan later informs me she was discussing the Civil Rights movement with him earlier that day. Liam knew that some people didn't like some other people because of something to do with color and skin. Close enough for government work.
Eventually, Liam fesses up that Quinn was just being a brat and yelled at Liam. No harm done.
